Guide: Battery and Charger Terms

Battery and charger terms

Battery and charger language mixes chemistry, camera kinds, charger types and materials, and the same word can mean different things in different lines. This guide separates the terms in plain language, so an inquiry can use them precisely. No models and no parameters are stated, because none are evidenced.

Battery terms

Rechargeable means a battery that can be charged and reused, as opposed to a single-use cell. Lithium and lithium-ion name the chemistry of most rechargeable camera batteries. Digital, mirrorless, DSLR and broadcast name the camera kinds the batteries serve. V mount names a mounting system for larger batteries on professional rigs. A battery pack groups cells into a single unit.

Each term answers a different question: chemistry answers what the battery is made of, camera kind answers what it fits, and mounting answers how it attaches. An inquiry that uses the right term for the right question will be understood; an inquiry that mixes them will confuse. The battery types guide explains the types themselves.

Charger and material terms

Dual means a charger that charges two batteries in one session. USB means a charger that draws power from a USB source. Universal means a charger that aims to cover several battery types. V mount battery charger means a charger for V mount batteries specifically. Each term answers a workflow question, not a quality claim: dual is about simultaneity, USB is about power source, universal is about coverage.

GaN means gallium nitride, a semiconductor material used in modern power electronics. It is a generic technology term, not a brand, and it describes the material of the power circuit, not the charger's power output, connector, or quality. The GaN basics guide explains it in full. A buyer who uses GaN precisely — as a material term — will write a better inquiry than one who uses it as a synonym for powerful.

Terms that are not used here

This site does not use model codes, wattage figures, or camera brand names, because none are evidenced. A model code without evidence is a guess, a wattage figure without evidence is an invention, and a brand name without evidence of compatibility is a claim. The inquiry is where specific models and figures are discussed, with the specification sheet as the evidence, and where compatibility is confirmed from real stock information.
