Guide: Laptop Charger Interfaces

Laptop charger interface types

A charger interface is the connector that joins the charger to the laptop. This guide explains the interface types in general terms, with USB-C interfaces for laptops as the main type. No models and no power figures are stated, because none are evidenced. The word USB-C here names a connector shape, not a charger model.

USB-C interfaces for laptops

USB-C is a connector shape: a small, oval, reversible plug that fits either way up. Chargers with a USB-C interface for laptops use that connector to deliver power to a laptop that accepts it. The reversibility matters in daily use: a plug that fits either way up is faster to connect in the dark, on a train, or in a hurry, and it wears less from forced insertion.

USB-C is also a shared connector: the same shape charges laptops, phones, tablets and other devices, which means one charger can serve several devices in principle. In practice, the laptop and the charger must still match in what they negotiate, and a connector match alone does not guarantee a working charge. The specification for the exact charger type, confirmed in the inquiry, is what guarantees the match, not the connector shape alone.

Other interface types

Other laptops use other connectors: round barrel plugs of several sizes, rectangular plugs, and magnetic connectors that detach when pulled. Each laptop kind has its own connector history, and a charger for one kind will not fit another. The connector is the first thing an inquiry should name, because a charger with the wrong connector cannot serve the laptop at all, whatever its other qualities.

A buyer who names the laptop kind and the connector type will receive a specific answer. A buyer who names only the word charger will receive a general answer that fits no laptop. The GaN basics guide explains the charger technology, and this guide explains the connectors; the two together describe a charger fully enough to inquire about it.

What to ask next

Name the laptop kind and the connector type you need, the quantity you have in mind, and the market you sell into. Ask for the specification for the exact type, the quantity terms, the lead time, and the certificates for your market, by name, with documents attached. The bulk GaN charger inquiry page lists these confirmations.

Before payment, confirm the minimum order quantity and lead time for your order. Certificates are available upon request.
